Know the area

Lukla is a town in the Solukhumbu District of Sagarmatha Zone north-eastern Nepal. It is located within the Khumbu area at 2,860 meters (9,383 ft) Latitude : 27 41′ 10” Longitude : 86 43′ 50”where most people visiting the Himalayas near Mount Everest start their journey.

Lukla means place with many goats and sheep, one is not likely to see many roaming around these days. It is mainly inhabited by the Sherpas and has a population of around 1200. It houses the oldest Sherpa monastery built around the start of 19th century by Lama Kyamgon-Deltsen- Donden. Born in 1777 AD, his ancestral home was in Lathetar in West Sikkim. By our initiative this historical Gompa is now being renovated to its former glory.

Tenzing-Hillary Airport, also known as Lukla Airport, is a small airport, In January 2008, the airport was renamed in honor of Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, the first persons to reach the summit of Mount Everest. There are daily flights between Lukla and Kathmandu during daylight hours and in good weather. Although the flying distance is short (30 to 40 Minutes), weather differs raining in Lukla while the sun is shining in Kathmandu.

The paved tarmac is only accessible to helicopters and small fixed wing short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft such as Twin Otters or Dornier Do 228. There is about a 700-metre (2,000 ft) angled drop at the end of the runway to the valley below. The airport is contained within a chain link fence and patrolled by the Nepal armed police or civil police around the clock.

Pasang Lhamu Nicole-Nicky Hospital in Lukla is established in honor of first Nepalese women Pasang Lhamu Sherpa to scale the Mount Everest and first Swiss mountain guide Nichole Nicky. Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, first Nepalese women to reach the top of the mountain on April 22nd, 1993 via South ridge was killed while ascending from the peak. The hospital is providing service to mountaineers along with 17 thousand locals of Chaurikharka, Juving and Walk village development committees.

The Lukla Dumche which was started in 1995, takes place from the seventh to the fourth month. During the Dumche, Ralpa Dorje’s twisted iron rod is displayed at Thangme and the image of Shakyamuni Buddha and the seven grains at rimejung.

Phakding lodge offers the perfect opportunity to reflect on your travels. Whether you have come from Namche, Kongde or Phakding you will find here the perfect place to wind down. Phakding lodge at 2,610m, 3 hours from Lukla sits in a very tranquil spot on the banks of the river Dudh Koshi, with dramatic pine forested cliff faces on the opposite river bank. Enjoy the views from the pretty sunroom and later you can relax around the warmth of the fire. About an hours walk from the lodge is the Rumijung Monastery founded by the Sherpa Lama ‘Khemp Dorje’ in the 16th century for those with extra energy to spend.

Phakding is situated at an altitude of 2,601m (8,563 ft) with 27̊ 42’ 09” latitude and 88̊ 43’ 50” longitude.It is 3 hours walk from Lukla. It is located between Lukla & Namche.It is the first overnight staying station for the trekkers in this region.It has different casts like Sherpa,Tamang,Magar etc and have different cultures and is staying as neighboring villagers.There are different categories lodges from normal budget lodge to high comfort lodges and facilities vary as per the category and applied rates.

Pema Choeling Monastery is a beautiful destination that is yet to be developed and practiced as a tourism product.Although, the trail is visited every year by local visitors, and foreigners, the potential of the Trail has been underestimated and neglected. The Pema Choeling Trail is the trekking Trail that connects Rimijung with Gomlha, Pangjung and Dhumijoa. Rimijung can be reached from Ghat, Rokamba, Zomfute and Phakding from the main Everest Trail. From Rimijung, visitors can visit Pema Choeling Monastery, Tye Khongma Monastery and Gomlha nunnery settlement for a Buddhist and Sherpa ‘way of life’ experience. Visiting these places is good for getting acclimatized, enjoying the natural beauty and experiencing cultural and religious Sherpa tradition. The Pema Choeling Trail has a lot to offer to the visitors; from high mountains to green forests and beautiful ‘Mani.’ These places have their own way of expressing beauty both natural and cultural.

Monjo is in between Phakding and Namche at an altitude of 2850m, Latitude : 27 46′ 248” Longitude : 86 43′ 391”.It is a small Village having few Tourist Lodges. Yeti Mountain Home is located just before the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park on the left side of trial towards Everest Base camp and at the bottom of Thamserku Peak. We have Monjo Primary School just behind our lodge. You can visit a Monastery which is close to the school.

Namche Bazaar is a Gateway to Mount Everest and also known as Capital of Khumbu Valley. It is located within the Khumbu area at 3,440 metres (11,286 ft) Latitude : 27 48′ 271” Longitude : 86 42′ 550”, populating the sides of a hill. Namche is the oldest trade centre for the Khumbu region. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 1647 people residing in 397 individual households.

West of Namche is Kongde Ri at 6,187 metres (20,299 ft) and to the east is Thamserku at 6,623 metres (21,729 ft). Namche has a permanent population of around 800. On Saturday mornings, a weekly market is held in the center of the village. People from all around the Namche area come to sell their wares, to locals and to visitors alike. The market usually starts around sunrise and begins to break up around 11 am. Also, there may be a daily Tibetan market where clothing and cheap Chinese consumer goods tend to be the main articles for sale. Tibetan merchants have traditionally come to the market by way of high passes through the Himalayas; however the Chinese currently disallow this passage.

A good acclimatisation walk from Namche Bazaar goes to Khumjung valley and Kunde Hospital. Khumjung Valley is situated near Mount Khumbila, 3970 metres from sea level. A monastery in Khumjung houses a purported Yeti scalp. This village has modern communications such as internet and mobile and landline phones.

Kunde Hospital has serves 8,000 people from Khumbu district. It is situated 3,840 metres above sea level and was founded by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1966. The hospital was funded and operated by The Himalayan Trust until 1976 and is now supported by the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation. The resort is located just above the traditional village in an idyllic location. From here you can enjoy the panoramic views of the village and its soothing landscapes.

An extra day is ideally required to acclimatize, visit the Khunde Hospital and learn about the ethnic Sherpa Culture once you reach Namche.

A four-hour walk through magnificent countryside and pretty forests lead you to the charming village of Thame (3,800m) on the old trading route from Tibet. Also the birthplace of both Tenzig Norgay and Apa Sherpa who climbed Everest 21 times. During the day you can explore the 16th Century Thame Gompa which can be reached within an hour, you may wish to continue up to Sandar Peak where the panoramic views are excellent.

Thame is a small village situated at the end of Khumbu Valley in the Solukhumbu District in Nepal. It stands tall at an altitude of 3800m Latitude : 27 49′ 873” Longitude : 86 39′ 030” . It is remote, and untouched by the effects of modern civilization. It is on the salt trading route that existed betweenTibet, Nepal and India. Many Sherpa live in the village and it is the home of Apa Sherpa, who holds the world record for summiting Everest 20 times, Ang Rita Sherpa: recognized as snow leopard. It was also a childhood home of Tenzing Norgay, who was (with Sir Edmund Hillary) one of the first men to climb Mt Everest. Thame is an absolute gem.

On top of Thame Valley, Yeti Mountain Home with 18 comfort rooms equipped with modern amenities provides breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Mt. Thamserku and Mt. Kusum Khanguru.

Thame also features a magnificent 16th century Nyingmapa Monastery. Built by Lama Rolwa Dorje: the brother of Sangwa Dorje, it was built for household monks. Every year, the monastery celebrates couple of vibrant festivals. They are known as Dumchi and Mani Rimdu festivals.

The 630Kw Thame Hydro Power plant was built as an alternative source of energy to preserve forest with in the Sagarmatha National Park. After its completion in 1994. it is supply electricity to the major villages in the Khubu region Namche, Khumujung, Kunde, Phurte, Thgamo, Thame and Thame Teng. The project is owned & managed by khumbu Bijuli Company with 85% Sharholing of user in the Khumbu & 15% of Nepal Electricity Authority. Know the area

Kongde is the highest location which has only comfort lodge on entire Khumbu Region and it has been established by Yeti Mountain Home Group at an altitude of 4250m Latitude : 27 46′ 027” Longitude : 86 41′ 030” to provide panoramic views of the Majestic Mountains. Namely, Mount: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho-oyu, Gyajung Khang, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kusum Khangugu, Tawache and Cholatse. It was the original route from Thame to Kongde which had been used by original Khumbu Sherpas before 1950s and now it is newly renovated by Yeti Mountain Home Group having approval of EIA.

Around 500m from Yeti Mountain Home Lodge to Farak Ri peak and it has the panoramic birds eye views of entire Khumbu Valley and view of 8000m peaks; Everest, Lhotse Makalu, Cho Oyu, Ama Dalam, Thamserku and many other Peaks of Khumbu Valley such as Cholatse, Island Peak, etc.

The resort further reflects the evoking views of the entire Khumbu Valley. Furthermore, at an altitude of 5000m is a beautiful lake which is like a drop of pearl in the mountainous ocean. Yeti Mountain Home Kongde consists of 12 comfortable rooms with hot & cold water.
